Temperature
Temperature is one of the most critical factors in the wine conservation. The ideal temperature for storing wine is between 10°C and 15°C (50°F and 59°F). Temperature fluctuations can cause wine to expand and contract, which can lead to air entering the bottle and oxidation of the wine. A constant, cool temperature is preferable.
Humidity
Adequate humidity is essential to keep cork in good condition. A humidity level of around 70% is ideal. If the humidity is too low, the cork can dry out and allow air in, which oxidizes the wine. On the other hand, too high humidity can promote mold growth and damage labels.
Bottle Position
Storing wine bottles in a horizontal position helps keep the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and allowing air to enter. This practice is especially important for wines with natural corks.
Light
Light, especially direct sunlight and fluorescent lights, can damage wine by breaking down its compounds and accelerating aging. It is advisable to store wine in a dark place or in tinted bottles that filter light.
Vibration
Vibrations can disturb sediments in wine, affecting its aging process and flavor. It is best to avoid storing wine near appliances or busy areas.
