In Greece and Rome, the gods of wine were highly revered for their intoxicating and aphrodisiacal powers; in the classical world wine was associated with love and carnal enjoyment, but also with tranquility, rest and relief.
Wine has been introduced and integrated into the culture of all the civilizations in which it has been present, so it has served as a form of cultural expansion: for example, the Romans planted vineyards throughout Mediterranean Europe.
There is even a legend of how Dionysus, the Greek god of wine (known in Rome as Banco) conquered Asia as far as India, accompanied by an army of musicians and dancers who danced and offered wine.
