The Castilla de Canena Primero Royal Temprano
History and Cultivation of the Royal Variety
The Royal variety is the native variety of the province of Jaén whose cultivation in the area dates back centuries. Its cultivation has suffered a drastic recession since the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century until almost its total extinction, only a scant 1,200 hectares bear witness to this varietal.
Challenges in Production and Marketing
The difficulty in harvesting the fruit and its lower fat yield in favour of other varietals such as Picual are the causes of this situation. At the moment, very few Royal oils are extracted and they are practically not marketed, due to the complexity of their collection, and they are harvested exclusively when ripe.
