Grape types for the best wines

If you are a lover of good wine you should know that there are many varieties of grapes: for the table, for preserves, for raisins, to obtain musts and, of course, for the winemaking process.

In this last group are collected the largest number of varieties, since the main use of the vine is wine; there are red and white grapes depending on the wine they give.

Grape varieties and types

Table grapes: these are large grapes of uniform size and color, the bunches they form are not compact to favor their consumption; there are three types: white, red and black. Canning grapes: these are seedless varieties used with other fruits in cocktails and salads.

Grapes for raisins: they should have a smooth texture and no seeds; if they are to be consumed directly they should be large, but if they are to be used in confectionery, small ones are preferable.

Grapes for natural juices (musts): these varieties should maintain their natural flavor and aroma after the treatments to which they are subjected for preservation.

Grape types for the best wines

Grape varieties are considered the most important factor in differentiating wine; in Anglo-Saxon countries, people usually order or buy wine on the basis of its variety.

Global varieties

The best known grape types in the world are those used in the great French regions to make the best wines: Cabernet Sauvignon (Bordeaux), Pinot Noir (Burgundy), Chardonnay (Burgundy whites), Merlot (Bordeaux reds from the Saint Emilion area), Syrah (Rhone Valley).

Cabernet Sauvignon: it gives a pleasant acidity to the wine, and ages very well in barrel, so it is widely used in varietal blends. It is by far the most widely used French grape in the production of many of the world's best wines.

Merlot: also of French origin, it is the most aromatic grape, usually with a smooth taste in the mouth.

Syrah: The properties of this variety depend a lot on the place where it is grown, and the climate, it is another very well known and used French grape.

Red Varieties - Tempranillo

It owes its name to the fact that the grapes are harvested before other varieties, it is a grape with fruity and aromatic notes; it is the most widespread and typical variety (wine made from a single type of grape) in the country.

In Ribera del Duero and Toro it is called "Tinta del País" and "Tinta de Toro" respectively, and in Castilla La Mancha, it can also be found under the name of "Cencibel".

Andalusian wines, on the other hand, belong to an ancient winemaking tradition, among which are the ports, madeiras and marsalas born in the 16th and 17th centuries as a consequence of the maritime boom.

The cultivation and production of wines in Andalusian lands enjoys an international reputation.
